The success story of Barista Roberts, one of Africa’s popular coffee baristas is quite inspiring.
Given his poor family background and a lack of funds to pursue a university degree, Roberts Mbabazi had to get a job to support himself as a waiter in Uganda’s restaurants and bars.
While working these jobs, this 26 year-old Ugandan learned to brew coffee. Today, he is an accomplished coffee expert in his country and provides consulting services to startups and coffee processing factories.
Roberts used the money he saved from his odd waiting jobs to sponsor the education that made him a coffee barista.
Meet Barista Roberts…
‘Barista’ is an Italian word for a person who makes and serves coffee. It’s a very specialized profession that requires experts to understand the full process of making coffee – from cultivation, harvesting, roasting, blending to brewing.

In 2010, Roberts formed his own coffee consultancy company, Barista Pro Coffee, and has gone on to win several Barista Championship awards and competitions in his native Uganda and other parts of Africa.
He started his company with about $7,000 which he used to buy coffee-making machines and other pieces of equipment.
Robert’s businesses currently earn about $2,000 every month in a country where the average monthly income for households is less than $400. He remains passionate about teaching other people the coffee business and is making plans to set up a coffee academy for aspiring Baristas in Uganda.
