Today, Zain Asher is a national business and personal finance correspondent for CNN, where she appears across platforms covering the latest news on money and the economy. She often reports from the New York Stock Exchange, covering equities and IPOs and interviewing entrepreneurs and dignitaries.

But that’s not how her story started.

Originally from Nigeria and raised by a single mother through a tough childhood, Zain worked as an office receptionist for several years and was frustrated by a lack of progression in her career.

But that didn’t stop her from preparing for the future of her dreams. She had always wanted to work for a major television news corporation since she was 15, but she didn’t quite know how she would progress from a receptionist job to become a CNN reporter.

In this very inspiring TEDx Talk, Zain Asher tells a compelling story of her rise to a dream job. She shares several powerful nuggets of wisdom about trusting your struggles, preparing in advance for life’s opportunities and taking a contrarian stance to collaborate, rather than compete with others.

Her message in one sentence:

Prepare in advance, and trust your struggle. One day, your opportunity will eventually come.
